Biography

Dr Iqbal serves on programme committee and advisory committee of many international conferences and journals. He has published more 100 papers in international journals, conferences, book chapters and workshops. He has supervised to completion 12 PhD students in information retrieval, health shock prediction, disaster management, emotions modelling, industrial automation and fault detection.

Dr Iqbal is a co-investigator on a two-year project (2016-2018) “Data driven computational models for prediction and simulation of path dependences in complex dynamic labour market systems” funded through evidence for policy design centre for international development at Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University, USA and Human Resource Development Fund (HRDF) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

He is a principle investigator for knowledge transfer partnership and spin-out company, a supplier of high-tech intelligent data-driven solutions. He is seconded to the Interactive Coventry Limited.

Dr Iqbal was principle investigator on a one year project (2012-2013) “Driver’s intent prediction: self-learning car initiative” funded by Technology Strategy Board funded in collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover Ltd.

From 2013 – 2015, Dr Iqbal worked on a number of Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise Network (KEEN) projects in collaboration with Infinity Wireless Ltd, Modus IT Ltd to develop high-tech solutions relating to data recovery apps and big data analytics for businesses. He was principle investigator on a two year project (2011-2013) “Development of an innovation teaching tool using web/mobile and service oriented technologies” funded by Technology Strategy Board Project in collaboration with Currant limited.

From 2009 - 2013, he was principle investigator for an EPSRC funded project titled “Task Sensitive Search Recommender System Based on Relevance Feedback”. The project was carried out in collaboration with Trinity Expert Systems.

From 2007 – 2009, he was involved in a number of projects to introduce novel teaching, learning and assessment methods. These projects were funded by Coventry University, CILASS: Centre for Inquiry-based Learning in the Arts and Social Sciences, University of Sheffield. Also over this period, he was involved in a number of industrial consultation activities.

Dr Iqbal was also involved in the project management and development of the EU FP7 project CHIL (Computers in Human Interaction Loop) at the Technical University of Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Research Interests

Human Factors; Assistive Technologies and Supportive Systems for Elderly People; Personalised Information Retrieval Systems using Implicit Feedback; User-Centred Design and Evaluation of Ubiquitous and Collaborative Systems; Pedagogical research, particularly in collaborative learning, problem-based or activity-led learning

Vision Statement

He is currently a Reader in Human-Centred Technology in the School of Computing, Electronics and Mathematics at Coventry University. His main research interests lie in Big Data Analytics and Information Retrieval. He has worked on a number of data driven projects including retrieval and reengineering of source codes, health informatics, traffic congestion and industrial fault detection and isolation. A particular focus of his research is also to balance technological factors with human aspects so as to explore the implications for better design of personalised and contextualised systems. He is also working on emotions modelling, cloud computing and energy efficient communication protocols. The underlying data processing models used in his research are based on human behaviour theories and novel machine learning and data mining algorithms.

Fingerprint Fingerprint is based on mining the text of the person's scientific documents to create an index of weighted terms, which defines the key subjects of each individual researcher.
