    Research Interests

    Nella van den Brandt is a researcher on religion, gender and diversity issues. She is senior editor of the journal Religion and Gender, published by Brill. She has published in journals such as Religion, Social Compass, European Journal of Women's Studies, Temenos: Nordic Journal of Comparative Religion, Journal of Muslims in Europe, and Social Movement Studies, and the Journal of the American Academy of Religion. She completed a postdoctoral project (2016-2021) at the department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Utrecht University (the Netherlands) focusing on Western European literature and culture as locations for studying religious transformation, gender and race. In February 2021, she received a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship for a two-year qualitative research at Coventry University (UK) on women leaving religion in the UK and the Netherlands. She studied Social and Cultural Anthropology, Arabic Languages and Cultures and Women's Studies at Utrecht University, the Netherlands (2002-2010), and completed a PhD thesis at Ghent University (Belgium) (2010-2014) exploring contemporary discourses on religion among feminist activists and social movements in Flanders. She is interested in comparative religious studies, gender studies, and the study of religion, race and the secular, feminism, representation, bodies and embodiment. She has written about feminism and women’s movements in Flanders and the Netherlands; women’s religiosity as constructed in novels and films; the representation of women converting to Islam and Judaism in memoirs and documentaries; and the problematization of Islam and Muslims in public debates and literature and culture. Her monograph entitled Religion, Gender and Race in Western European Literature and Culture: Thinking through Religious Transformation is forthcoming with Routledge.
