Personal profile

I am Associate Professor in Business/Management in the School of Strategy and Leadership. In this role I teach a year 3 course on decision making in international business, and am responsible for line managing staff. I am also Faculty Director of International Partnerships (Latin America). In this role I have led on the development of a major transnational education partnership with a leading Mexican university network. I also manage partnerships in France and Denmark. Previously, I was an Associate Head of the School of Strategy and Leadership. I was responsible for corporate engagement and developing commercial activity within the School.

Prior to embarking on an academic career, I spent over a decade as a country risk analyst and consultant, specialising in Latin America. This region remains a key focus of my professional interests. I publish and advise frequently on economics and politics in the region for various consultancies and media outlets. I also draw on my consultancy career to pursue research in the area of strategic foresight and experiential education. I am particularly interested in how consultancies engage in forward-looking analysis, and the use of accelerated learning techniques on leadership development programmes.

I am Treasurer of the British Academy of Management. I am also a Visiting Professor at the Universidad del Pacífico, Lima, Peru. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

I have three primary research interests:

  • Experiential learning: I am especially interested in the use of accelerated learning techniques in leadership development, as well as the teaching of scenario analysis.
  • Strategic foresight: I am interested in the processes that specialist consultancy firms use to produce forward-looking analytical judgements. This work engages with theoretical ideas related to sensemaking, intuition and rationality.
  • Latin American political economy: I am particularly interested in the recent political and economic history of Peru and Costa Rica
