    Personal profile

    Biography

    Bibliography

Having graduated with a PhD in Economics from the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Imperial College London, I worked in Risk Management in London for two years, for a large US firm. My previous career was in industry, where I had a successful career as a qualified professional accountant (ACMA). My first academic post was at University of Manchester in 1992. There, I held the post of Lecturer in Accounting and Finance. I was promoted to Reader of Finance shortly after becoming Senior Lecturer of Finance. I then took up a readership post at Aston University and became professor of Finance in 2007. I have taught and worked in a university environment for most of my working life. Over the years, I have taught both accounting and finance, although most of my teaching has concentrated on Finance. I have taught undergraduate, masters and doctoral students.

Together with Professor Alan Lowe, I became Joint-editor of British Accounting Review in April 2013. At the time, the journal did not have an impact factor. The journal is now ranked 11/103 in the Business Finance category with an Impact Factor: 3.333 (ISI Journal Citation Reports) with over 400 paper submissions per year. I sit on the editorial boards of several other academic journals.

My academic research focuses on both Accounting and Finance. They include private financial reporting including impression management, risk management, asset pricing, fund performance, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, the information content of internet message boards, and analyst following/recommendations. My published papers are widely read and have appeared in Journal of Banking and Finance, Quantitative Finance, Journal of Forecasting, Accounting, Organization and Society, Management Accounting Research, Journal of Banking and Finance. I have supervised to successful completion over 14 PhD students in Accounting and Finance.

I am an associate of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and have taught  both profession accountancy and post-graduate executive students.
