Biography

Dr Meghdad Bagheri (MB) holds a First Class BEng degree in Civil Engineering (from IAU), an MSc degree in Geotechnics (Distinction) from The University of Strathclyde and The University of Glasgow (a joint course), and a PhD degree in Geotechnical Engineering from the Nottingham Centre for Geomechanics, The University of Nottingham (UoN).

Before coming to the UK, MB served as a Site Engineer on a number of national and international construction projects such as the Persian Gulf Complex, the World Trade Twin Towers, and the Shiraz University's Site Development Scheme, in City of Shiraz, Iran.

MB has a wealth of experience in teaching at secondary education (SE), further education (FE), and higher education (HE) levels. Since 2013, he has been actively involved in the public awareness and widening participation schemes, delivering academic-style tutorials to the pupils of under-represented estate schools in East Midlands. At the UoN, he was involved in delivering a wide range of modules including Geotechnics 1 (1st Year), Geotechnics 2 (2nd Year), Geotechnics 3 (3rd Year) and Critical State Soil Mechanics (4th Year ) to the Civil Engineering cohort. In 2017, he joined the Cambridge Education Group (Coventry University’s Partner) as an Engineering Tutor, delivering a wide range of modules in International Foundation Program (IFP), Master Qualification Program (MQP), and International Year 1 (IY1) Program, during which he received the "Inspirational Staff" award two times in a row, and later promoted to the Coordinator of Engineering Department in 2018. MB joined Coventry University as an Assistant Lecturer in Civil Engineering in 2019. MB has recently been promoted to the Lecturer in Civil Engineering and appointed as the Associate Course Director of Civil Engineering (apprenticeship) courses.

MB's research experience is broad and encompasses a number of the various areas that fall under the heading of Civil Engineering. His MSc dissertation was focused on the development of novel equipment to measure dynamic propagation of mechanical waves in soils that are partially saturated with water and assessment of the effect of degree of saturation on the very small strain stiffness of sandy soils. The successful completion of this project was followed by an invitation from the University of Strathclyde to work on the second phase of this project as a Visiting Researcher. He then joined the Heriot-Watt University as a Research Assistant to work on a Dean of Engineering funded research program on the effect of climate change and environmental variations on CO2 sequestration process in superficial unsaturated soils. In 2015 he joined the University of Warwick as a Research Assistant during which, he worked in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde and Loughborough University for developing cost-efficient high-tech geotechnical testing equipment and sensors potential for commercialisation. In his doctoral research, he worked on the time- and rate-dependent response of unsaturated natural clays. The outcomes of his research have been published in high quality peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.

Research Interests

Meghdad's current research focuses on the characterisation of the thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of soft soils, numerical modelling of soft soils behaviour under the road and railway embankments using advanced critical-state constitutive models, and development of experimental solutions for better understanding the mechanical behaviour of geomaterials.
