As part of the EnergyREV project, Luigi is working on overcoming the barriers to the adoption of artificial intelligence, distributed control and sophisticated sensing and modelling techniques in UK energy infrastructures.
His PhD investigated the best methods to reduce energy use in battery electric vehicles, while maintaining at least the same level of passenger comfort and performance. This research will make a significant contribution to improving the optimisation of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems (HVAC) and positively impact on the energy consumption of electric vehicles.
As a former visiting PhD student at Coventry University, Luigi used the Horizon 20202 DOMUS project data, to develop a fast simulation of the thermal environment inside a Nissan Leaf. This opportunity has given him the knowledge of AI, data-driven methods and reinforcement learning (RL) using an open-source framework of tools ranging from Emacs to OpenAI.
As a volunteer, he has been a Member of the Onda Solare team since 2018. He participated in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 2019 in the Cruiser class with the solar vehicle prototype Emilia 4 LT. With the same vehicle, he participated in the iLumen European Solar Challenge 2021 and 2022. He is currently involved in the development of the new solar vehicle Emilia 5.
