PhD Project
Julyan Levy is currently researching plant agency and its role in prefiguring community economies.
Using ethnography to observe specific plants and their ability to disrupt and subvert capitalist economic relationships.
Julyan aims to bring focus to the decolonisation of the human-plant relationship - drawing on Western scientific epistemology through a more-than-human, multi species lens whilst explicitly acknowledging how this academic 'turn' bares a striking resemblance to specific Indigenous sciences that understand peoples kin based relationships with plants.
Biography
Julyan Levy is a qualified chef and humanities secondary school teacher. His undergraduate anthropology dissertation, a mini-ethnography of eco-villages / low-impact intentional communities in Devon, was published in a Routledge environmental volume in 2019. His masters dissertation was a multispecies ethnography of the human-cannabis relationship. Since 2018 Julyan has been a member of the Green Party Drugs Policy working group.
