Personal profile

John Morris is a political economist with research interests in financial markets, risk and regulation, central banking, consumer credit and financial inclusion. He completed his PhD in 2015 in the Geography Department at Durham University, and earlier that year his work won ‘Best Graduate Student Paper’ at the New Directions in International Political Economy Conference at University of Warwick. John's distinct reseach contribution is to bring the insights of cultural economy to bear on the problematics of international political economy.  John is the author of Securing Finance, Mobilizing Risk (2018), an exploration of the evolution of financial risk management at the Bank of England since the early 1990s. His work locates significant regulatory change in discrete and subtle acts of rewriting technical points and narratives, rather than shifts in "paradigms. " John has also published in peer reviewed journals such as Geoforum,  Journal of Cultural Economy and Finance and Society. John's work at Coventry involves supporting the university's financial inclusion and capabilities teams, contributing to reports on the affordable lending sector and inclusive credit scoring. He has taught Economic Geography and International Political Economy at Durham University and University College London. John is keen to supervise PhD students in topics such as central banking, financial regulation, affordable lending and financial education.

Research Interests

Political economy; financial geography, financial risk, central banking, financial regulation, financial inclusion, affordable lending, consumer credit.

Vision Statement

My ongoing aim is to repoliticize financial regulation by opening up its secretive, technical and abstract nature to everyday political contestation. In a similatr vein, my work at Coventry is directed towards identifying and working past barriers to the wider coverage of affordable lenders in the UK.
