Biography

Dr Hafiz Alaka is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering and the Built Environment with qualifications in Civil Engineering and Construction Management. He is a professional member of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). His research interests cover a range of topics in construction, in particular the application of digital technologies such as big data analytics, artificial intelligence and Building Information Modelling (BIM) to the construction industry, using data collected experimentally or socially.

Hafiz has led in, and been involved in, collaborative research worth millions of pounds including deconstruction and recovery information modelling using Big Data and use of BIM and artificial intelligence to reduce construction waste. Notable partners on these projects include Balfour Beatty Group Limited, AHR Architects, and Createanet among many others.

Hafiz has published more than 24 articles in reputable journals of international standing and has presented several conference papers. He is also a reviewer for reputable journals. His publications cover digital technologies (including BIM, big data analytics, and artificial intelligence) application to construction, construction waste minimization, construction firm performance and sustainable concrete. He currently has a particular interest in research on the mental health of construction workers.

Hafiz teaches modules across the Project/Construction Management and Civil Engineering programmes. Examples of taught modules include project management, operational management (including scheduling and 4D BIM), construction economics, structural design and further mathematics. He is a keen user of online technologies like Kahoot! for teaching and his teaching philosophy considers ‘student as partner’.
