Personal profile

Dr Hafiz Alaka is currently a Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering and the Built Environment with qualifications in Construction and Management. He is a professional member of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Hafiz is committed to ongoing 21st century inter-disciplinary research with more focus on application of digital technology to construction processes (at consultancy and contracting levels), construction management and construction businesses. My specific research areas include:

  • Big Data and Predictive analytics for  project processes and management
  • Data gathering through sensors for optimal performances (internet of things)
  • Building Information Management
  • Big Data Analytics for waste reduction
  • Firms’ performance measurement and methodology advancement for construction businesses insolvency prediction
  • Mental health of construction workers

Hafiz leads and takes part in collaborative research with reputable industry partners. He has been involved in over eight funded research projects worth over six millions pounds. Current projects include ‘Emission reduction (worth £500,000) with Earthsense Limited’ and ‘AutoBIM (worth £900,000) with Balfour Beatty’, among three others. Past projects include deconstruction and recovery information modelling, and Big Data Analytics for  construction waste reduction, among others. Other notable partners include AHR Architects, White Frog Publishing, Smallfry, and counting.

In the last four years, he has produced over 30 articles in journals of international standing. These include top journals with high impact factor including Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews (IF = 9.184); Resources, Conservation and Recycling (IF = 5.120); Waste Management (IF = 4.723); and Advanced Engineering Informatics Reviews (IF = 3.358) among many others. They also include 3-star rated journals in ABS like IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management (IF = 1.416) and Expert Systems with Application (IF = 3.768). Many of his papers submitted for mock REF were ranked as being 3* and above. He has also presented his works in world class conferences such as IEEE Big Data Computing Services and Applications; and Association of Researchers in Construction Management conference, among others. He has over 480 citations with H-index=12 and i10-index=13 (Google Scholar).

Hafiz currently supervises and examines PhDs. He is an invited speaker and delegate in a number of research events. He teaches Project and Contract management modules across the Civil Engineering and Construction Management programmes.
