Glauco De Vita (BA Hons, MPhil, PhD) is a Professor of International Business Economics in the Centre for Resilient Business and Society and Lead of the research Cluster/Theme 'Inclusive, Sustainable and Ethical Business and Society'. A Cambridge university alumnus and former senior analyst for a blue-chip, American multinational financial services corporation, Glauco joined Coventry University in November 2015, from Oxford Brookes University where over the years he held several key roles including as Faculty Associate Dean Research & Knowledge Exchange. Glauco has over 100 publications based on leading-edge contributions in various areas of economics, international finance and business and management. Some journal high spots include: Economics Letters; Journal of International Money and Finance; Journal of Financial Stability; Energy Economics; Urban Studies; Journal of Development Studies; Business History; Business Ethics Quarterly; International Journal of Management Reviews; Journal of Small Business Management; Annals of Tourism Research; Tourism Management; and Journal of Travel Research. He has published extensively also in management education (e.g., Studies in Higher Education), where he has also earned an international reputation. Glauco is a strong supporter of Coventry University’s Research Enriched Learning (REL) agenda with his research and pedagogic expertise informing UG and PG students’ mentoring and supervision, the creation of case studies and other teaching materials, guest lectures, and module design and upgrading (e.g. UG 366SAM, 'Critical Issues in Globalisation'). His recent book, “Roadmap to a successful PhD in Business & Management and the Social Sciences - The definitive guide for postgraduate researchers” (with J. Begley and D. Bowen, 2021, Peter Lang Publishing) attests to his intellectual leadership in supporting postgraduate researchers and early career researchers.

Glauco also has a track record of successful bid writing, including as Principal Investigator for both the ESRC (2007/8, RES 000-22-2350) and, more recently, The Leverhulme Trust (2023/24, RPG-2023-099). He also has considerable experience of successful supervision of master and doctoral students as well as PhD examining (Bath; Reading; Warwick; York; University of Cape Town, RSA; etc.). He is a member of various editorial boards and a Fellow of The HE Academy (UK). In January 2023, Glauco was also appointed as a member of the ESRC’s Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs) Peer Review College. He also served as a Member of the Advisory Panel to the UK Government Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

International Business Economics

My eclectic interests have developed over time, converging toward the study of phenomena located mostly at the interface of international economics, international economic development and international business. These include the macroeconomic environment, foreign direct investment (FDI), trade, the role of exchange rates, and outsourcing/off-shoring. These phenomena have been over-theorised over past decades, with too much model building and insufficient emphasis on testing the assumptions of underlying hypotheses. I prefer applied research because I am more interested in uncovering what happens in the real world by letting the data tell much of the story. The spark for any particular research project always stems from the identification of a knowledge gap within a particular debate. The challenge of addressing an issue that has been overlooked in previous work fills me with excitement and I truly enjoy the thrill of discovery. I also see considerable potential in both cross- and inter-disciplinary work; research that benefits from theoretical contributions from multiple disciplines or that draws from different methodological traditions, holds great potential for a better understanding of complex phenomena and for producing significant insights.
