Biography
Dr Edward Ong is a Lecturer in Forensic Psychology and a Course Director for the MSc Forensic Psychology and Mental Health (Online) course. He is a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society and joined the School of Psychological, Social, and Behavioural Sciences in 2018.
In 2018, he also completed his PhD in (Forensic-Clinical) Psychology at University Birmingham. His thesis is an exploratory, cross-cultural research that compares Malaysians in Malaysia and in the UK, in terms of how child maltreatment is being understood. Broadly speaking, the thesis looked at how professionals who are working in child protection, parents, and victims of child abuse; define and identify child maltreatment from their cultural perspective. This information is then explored further using a model that was being constructed and tested to understand child maltreatment via ecological and cultural factors.
Since joining Coventry University, Edward has primarily been involved in teaching forensic mental health, intervention for different client groups, risk assessment, and supervising research projects on the MSc Forensic Psychology (and Mental Health) courses. He is also involved in teaching the counselling psychology and clinical psychology modules on the MSc Applied Psychology.
Research Interests
Broadly speaking, my research interests are in child maltreatment, parenting, and cultural issues relating to child protection. However, I am currently focusing in these specific research areas:
- Harmful sexual behaviour among children/young people
- Adverse childhood experiences
- Complex trauma
- Non-offending pedophiles/Non-Offending Minor Attracted Persons
- Parentification
