Personal profile

Biography

I am a Lecturer in Stylistics at Coventry University, specialising in contemporary cognitive stylistics. Previously, I held a Teaching Fellowship at the University of Nottingham (Sep 2010 - Sep 2013), and completed my PhD there in December 2013.

In my research I analyse contemporary (postmodern and experimental) fiction using cognitive stylistic tools (Cognitive Grammar, Text World Theory). I frequently use reader response data (from online book reviews or from questionnaires, etc.) in order to explore how readers experience particular fictional worlds.

I am currently working on a number of diverse research projects. A monograph based on my doctoral research has recently been published with John Benjamins (https://benjamins.com/#catalog/books/lal.26), and I am also co-writing a textbook on Cognitive Grammar for stylistic application with Dr Marcello Giovanelli (Aston University) (please see publications list for reference details). Additionally, I am involved in an empirical reader response project with Dr Louise Nuttall (University of Huddersfield) which explores the cognitive processes of re-reading.

I have recently presented guest lectures at the University of Huddersfield, Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Nottingham. I am also on the academic review board for the journal MESH, which publishes undergraduate work across English studies, and I am the Treasurer for the International Association of Literary Semantics (IALS).
