    Personal profile

    Research Interests

My research interests are in mathematics, specifically applications of Singularity Theory to physical sciences such as optics and robotics, and in mathematicsl pedagogy in higher education.

    Biography

I am a mathematician by training, completing my PhD in Mathematics at the University of Liverpool in 1993, entitled "On Kinematic Singularities of low dimension".

I have held lectureship positions at Nottingham University and Oxford Brookes University and spent sabbatical years at the Universities of Auckland and Bristol.  At Oxford Brookes I became Head of the Mathematics Department and then Assistant Dean for Research.  I coordinated the Oxford Brookes REF submissions to REF2008 in General Engineering and in Computer Science.  I held a number of grants while at Oxford Brookes, including EPSRC and EU grants.

I moved to the University of the West of England, Bristol, in 2010 to become Head of Department of Engineering Design and Mathematics.  Subsequently I became Associate Dean for Research for the Faculty of Environment and Technology, where I coordinated the REF submissions for Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics and Architecture and the Built Environment to REF2021.

I joined Coventry University in 2022 as Academic Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing.

Externally I am Vice President of the London Mathematical Society, and undertake reviewing for a number of journals and for EPSRC.

I have supervised 4 PhD students to completion.
