Research Interests

My research interests focus on how economies are constructed and changed. Specific topics of interest include the creation of markets for the governance of public goods; and the construction of sustainable and inclusive economies.

Vision Statement

Economic phenomena don’t emerge naturally; they are constructed. My research focuses on how people, ideas, technology, data and power all come together in economic assemblages to produce the modern economy – or how they fail to do so. For this purpose, my work takes a multidisciplinary approach, informed by disciplines such as economic geography, economic anthropology, marketing and economics.

My current work looks at a number of specific contexts, including: local and regional economic development; markets for biodiversity offsets; social investment; and cryptocurrencies.

Biography

Dr Carlos Ferreira joined Coventry University in January 2014. He holds a BSc in Psychology, a PgDip in Marketing and an MSc in Applied Environmental Economics. Before his academic career, he worked in the marketing research industry in Portugal.

Dr Ferreira’s doctoral research focused on markets for biodiversity offsets. The resulting thesis brought together Social Studies of Finance and Neo-Polanyian Instituted Economic Process approaches to identify the generative mechanisms involved in the creation of these markets. This doctoral research was funded by the Sustainable Consumption Institute, University of Manchester.

Carlos’ research interests focus primarily on how economies are made and changed, with an evolving interest in how alternative economic spaces and actors are imagined and constructed. Located at the intersection of business and policy, his work explores two main topics: how to deliver sustainable, inclusive and smart regional economic development; and how data and humans come together in business environments.

Dr. Carlos Ferreira is Co-PI in the ReSSI project, and PI in the Consumers and Biodiversity Offsets project.
