Arfan Ghani holds a BEng (Hons) degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi, Pakistan, M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering (VLSI System Design) from the Technical University of Denmark and Ph.D. in Neural Engineering from the University of Ulster in N. Ireland, UK. He has worked as post-doc on UK/EU research grants (EPSRC/EU-FP7) at Ulster, Liverpool and Newcastle University. He has been PI/Co-PI on research grants funded by KTP and German Aerospace Centre in collaboration with UK/EU institutions. Arfan's industrial experience involves working as Research Scientist at Intel Research, University of Cambridge, UK. Arfan has published over 50 papers and currently collaborating with number of research groups in Pakistan, Korea and Germany. He is Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK.

Arfan is currently serving as an Associate Editor of Elsevier Neurocomputing and International Journal of Neural Engineering. He is a member of various program committees for more than ten international conferences and has been invited as a guest speaker for number of conferences/workshops in UK, UAE and Pakistan.

Vision Statement

My background is in microelectronics with research interests in the design and development of IoT based neuro inspired intelligent systems/technologies within smart cities. In the past, I have developed microelectronic chips for neural rehabilitation (Ulster University in collaboration with the University of Liverpool) and retinal prosthesis chips at Newcastle University in collaboration with Imperial College London and other EU institutions. We demonstrated the viability of implementing low power silicon neurons, benchmarked with machine learning algorithms. I have previously worked in exploring the design of such devices on number of research projects funded by UK/EU research councils (EPSRC, EU-FP7, KTP and German Aerospace Centre. My long term vision and research interests are to:

  1. Investigate and develop neuro-inspired low power IoT based devices for sensing
  2. Integrated portable devices for healthcare/assisted living
  3. Information processing and low power hardware architectures to support machine learning algorithms
