Biography

Andrew moved to Coventry University in 2015 as Professor and Executive Director of the newly-formed Transport and Mobility Research Centre. His background is in Psychology and Human Factors and he has applied the principles of user-centred design  in areas of virtual reality and simulation, autonomous and connected mobility, transport design and safety.

He hs previously worked at Birmingham University (Accident Research Unit, 1983-85), Loughborough University (HUSAT Research Institute 1985-97), Leeds University (Institute for Transport Studies, 1997-1999 and The Transport Research Laboratory (1999-2015)

He was Vice President of the Forum of European Road Safety Research Institutes (FERSI 2010-2015) and Honorary Professor of Life Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh (2008- 2017) and is currently Adjunct Professor (Research) at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia based within the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture.  Interests over his career have expanded from accident causation and investigation, through to a much wider view of the efficiency, acceptability and safety of transport systems.

He has published over 230 journal articles, book contributions and sponsored reports in the areas of driver behaviour and performance. Research impact has included i) design of vehicle secondary safety systems, ii) design of in-vehicle interfaces, iii) legislation on driver distraction. iv) international standards for measurement of driver behaviour, v) use of simulation for training and research.

He has supervised PhD students in design, cognitive ergonomics, psychophysiology and human factors, mostly within the applied area of driver behaviour and performance.

Vision Statement

As Research Director of our new Institute for Future Transport and Cities, I want to help bring together the expertise of our design, engineering, computing and life science experts in exciting research programmes that will have a real world impact. There are important new areas of investigation of direct importance to our daily lives - we all want safe, efficient and accessible mobility and the new Institute will provide a focus for the incredible talent and facilities that the University has developed.

Research Interests

User centred design of future transport systems. Methods for measuring behaviour and performance with a focus on driving or controlling vehicles. Automation of tasks. Ageing population and future cities.
