Personal profile

Research Interests

I am a cultural historian and political theorist who researches protest movements, radical political violence, and political activism, using oral histories to construct the histories 'from below' of radical movements.

Previous studies include a history and political theory of Autonomie in Germany, particularly Hamburg's squatted Rote Flora. I have also worked extensively on political philosophies related to these areas, as well as radical histories of the 1970s-90s. My current work looks at the history of the Antifascist movement in Europe since the 1970s. I am also currently compiling oral histories of prior members of armed guerilla groups since the 1970s. Current book projects underway include a history of Antifascism in German; a collected volume on Antifascism since 1974; and 'Radical Positions in Research' - a collection of deep reflections on research ethics and positionality when approaching radical topics.

I have founded and continue to co-lead the 'Worldwide Antifascism Research Network' (WARN), found online here: www.Antifascismresearchnetwork.com

I co-lead the 'Social Movements and Contentious Politics' theme, and supervise graduate students working on topics related to Antifascism from a scholarly (not security studies) angle. I also accept students working on radical German armed groups, the history of the German Left, or related european movements.
