Alex Pedcenko started his research career in the field of Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) after graduation from Riga Technical University, Latvia (MSc in Mechanical Engineering) in 2000 and begin to work as a Research Assistant in the Institute of Physics of University of Latvia (IPUL). The main topic of his research during these and forthcoming years in Latvia was on application of magnetic fields in the Czochralski Silicon single crystal growth process. In 2004 he defended his PhD Thesis "Measurement Technique for Instant Temperature Distribution in the Melt of Large-Scale Czochralski Silicon Growth" and got his PhD in Engineering Sciences (speciality Metrology). Since 2005 he worked as a Senior Researcher at IPUL on various experimental projects in the field of liquid metal MHD.
In January 2007 Dr Pedcenko joined Applied Mathematics Research Centre in Coventry University as a Research Assistant to take part in the two-year joint research project of Coventry and Warwick Universities sponsored by Carbon Trust fund (UK) and Rio-Tinto Alcan (France) on the suppression of MHD-instability surface waves in the Aluminium reduction cells. This experimental study was very successful and allowed for the first time to reproduce the mechanism of liquid Aluminium surface waves, which occur in the industrial process of Aluminium smelting, in the low-temperature laboratory model.
Successful collaboration with Rio-Tinto Alcan on this topic motivated further four-year experimental research projects sponsored by this company, which allowed to assess the impact of different technological factors on the stability of the liquid Aluminium electrolysers. Since 2009 Dr Pedcenko work as Senior Lecturer in Applied Physics at Coventry University.
