Biography

I obtained my PhD in Cardiovascular Physiology and Pharmacology from Coventry University where I investigated the cardiotoxic effects of chemotherapies and identified strategies for cardioprotection. During my PhD and post-doctoral research, I developed, optimised and validated several novel assays to screen for cardiotoxicity. Some of the main outputs from my research include several publications in high quality journals, presentation in national and international conferences, several patent application and work towards the foundation of the University spin out company, InoCardia.

I currently work as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Centre of Sport Exercise and Life Science and as the Lead Research Scientist at InoCardia. My academic and commercial research projects are in the area of cardiac contractility, cardiotoxicity, myocardial ischaemia and reperfusion injury, cardioprotection, aging, obesity and development of novel assays to screen for contractility and cardiotoxicity. I supervise a number of post-doctoral researchers, PhD students and MSc students on a range of cardiovascular research projects.

Research Interests

Cardiac contractility, cardiotoxicity, mitochondrial energetics, Drug-induced cardiotoxicity/Safety Pharmacology, myocardial ischaemia and reperfusion injury, cardioprotection, obesity and aging.

Vision Statement

The main objectives of my research are the understanding of the physiological and pathophysiological processes of the heart using physiologically relevant techniques. The heart is continuously beating throughout life, understanding the biomechanics of contractility can provide crucial information on disease development and the effects of drugs on the heart. Assays that are currently used, poorly simulate and predict the true biomechanics of the heart and the effects of drugs. Obesity and aging are increasingly becoming concerning factors in health and disease management. I am investigating the effects of aging and obesity on cardiac contractility, myocardial ischaemia and reperfusion injury, cardioprotection and the effects of pharmaceutical compounds on the heart. the main aim of these research projects are to understand physiological and molecular changes in cardiovascular function and disease development.
