IOM Indonesia, in collaboration with Coventry University’s Centre for Peace & Security (CPS), has advanced research on maritime security challenges in Indonesia that intersect with IOM’s core mandate, particularly in relation to irregular migration, human trafficking, and transnational organized crime (TOC).
Under the STREAM Project, supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), recent research led by Dr. Ioannis Chapsos has generated strategic insights into the complexity of Indonesia’s maritime governance, institutional coordination gaps, and protection-related risks in the maritime domain. These findings provide timely, evidence-based recommendations that can inform both programmatic interventions and policy-level engagement.
To ensure that IOM’s internal capacities align with these emerging priorities, a dedicated capacity-building session will be delivered by Dr. Chapsos for IOM staff. The session is designed to equip both new and existing team members with an enhanced understanding of maritime security dynamics, current operational trends, and potential entry points for IOM support within multi-agency frameworks. Beyond strengthening technical knowledge, the training also aims to promote forward planning and internal alignment across units in preparation for more integrated, protection-sensitive, and context-responsive programming in Indonesia’s coastal and border regions.
