    Description

Abstract: This paper illustrates how the BAWE corpus brings together Language, Technology and Society.
First it explores how the socio-educational purposes emerged from an examination of the social contexts of the four English universities from which student writing was collected. These purposes are specific to the British society of the time. The corpus itself consists of successful assessed student writing whose 2,896 texts are on average approximately 2000 words long. Second the paper outlines how the corpus was designed and the genre families that were subsequently identified. The language of these genre families is critical in their identification. Finally, it explains how technology was used to analyze the language of the corpus using two multidimensional analyses. The BAWE corpus is freely available for researchers, teachers and students to use for research or teaching/learning purposes.
