This pre-recorded event centres around the book Institution as Praxis – New Curatorial Directions for Collaborative Research, which was edited by Prof. Carolina Rito and Dr. Bill Balaskas and published almost a year ago by Sternberg Press and Nottingham Contemporary. The publication explores the question: How are curatorial and artistic practices advancing new research methods? The speculative interface of cultural practices has radically changed the way we think of the development of research qualities in curatorial and artistic enquiries. Institution as Praxis aims to identify and advocate for a multiplicity of practices taking place across the cultural sector that do not only engage with the imperative to deliver, but generate new modes of knowledge production and research in the field of visual culture, art, and the curatorial.

In this discussion, Rito and Balaskas are joined by farid rakun from ruangrupa – the Jakarta-based artists’ collective, who have exhibited and curated internationally, and who are the curators of next year’s documenta 15; and Pujita Guha and Abhijan Toto – the co-directors of The Forrest Curriculum, which is an itinerant and nomadic platform for mutual co-learning and ‘indisciplinary’ research.
