Description
Keynote Speaker, ICOPSY 2024Abstract
Social justice in education demands equity for all students not least in recognizing and embracing student diversity in terms of gender, age, ethnicity, neurodiversity, etc. As a mindset, social justice encourages openness, collaboration, and information sharing. In this presentation and considering how the global pandemic prompted re-examination of the exclusionary nature of physical mobility and the increasing focus on the digitalization of the home curriculum to include more students and geographical locations, I will discuss our research into inclusive Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). Drawing on the work of Ursula Franklin, I will examine the use of digital pedagogies such as COIL as a practice; a complex, multifaceted entity which contains much more than the sum of its components, and which brings into play notions of power, control, and responsibility. The consequences of what happens when we reproduce educational practices in unthinking ways will be examined to ensure digital pedagogies do not follow a design benefiting some while excluding many more. Finally I will share key findings from a large-scale project called iKudu, as an example of how COIL has been used as part of international curriculum transformation for the 10 university partners across South Africa and Europe who have been involved
