Description
About a century ago, new forms of abstraction in art and rapid technological advances coincided with increasing interest in spiritualism across Europe and the US. This raised questions which are now being asked again with the rise of art created with, and by, artificial intelligence (AI): What and who is art for? In this lecture I will use the painter Wasily Kandinsky’s 1911 essay Concerning the Spiritual in Art as a starting point for addressing these questions. I consider conversations with disembodied voices, compare rational and non rational approaches to AI art, and question definitions of artificiality and intelligence. Considering new technologies of abstraction applied to art, and more spiritual attitudes toward nature, AI is helping us reconsider our conceptions of reality.
