Description
Using the BAWE corpus for genre-based pedagogy
Abstract: This paper illustrates how the BAWE corpus can be used to go beyond AI (or corpus linguistics) to Human centred learning (through genre-based pedagogy). First it explores outlines the contents of the BAWE corpus and how it can be accessed by students or teachers for linguistic purposes. It then explains how the genre families were developed in relation to the main social purposes of university student writing and how these vary across disciplines. Finally it gives a couple of examples of how these genres can be used in lessons that adopt a genre-based pedagogy approach. The BAWE corpus is freely available for researchers, teachers and students to use for research or teaching/learning purposes. Links can be found at Coventry.ac.uk/BAWE, where numerous publications are also listed.
