Approaches to Teaching English Grammar from Pre-School to PhD

Activity: Talk or presentation › Invited talk
Description
I love the grammar of English! But as this talk will show, you don’t have to love grammar in order to teach it well. I have taught grammar in many different ways in different contexts, and have reached conclusions that I will share with you, with examples: 1. There is no ‘best’ way of teaching grammar. In fact, recycling grammar points from different approaches is valuable. 2. You need to consider the context – why are your students learning English and what do they need to know? 3. While variety is the spice of life, it takes time to establish a grammar teaching routine – this therefore needs to be planned over the school year and in relation to what has gone before, what will follow, and how this will be assessed. My approach to teacher education includes an experiential component, which you may wish to try out after my talk with friends/colleagues.
