Description

Conflict resolution scholars and practitioners have often observed that the best way to have security is to build community. This is true human security—grounded in human rights, local engagement, relations of respect and trust, and a context that allows us to meet our basic human needs. As we prepare to gather for our 5th Annual Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference, PCSJ invites submissions that reflect on the theme of the importance of both the global and local communities to strengthen human security.

What does human security mean in a time when democratic norms are challenged worldwide? What methods of research can assist us in understanding the best means of intervening and de-escalating various kinds of violence at all levels, be it organizational, family, community, or global? What innovations in theory and scholarship can bring new insights?

Reflecting on our field’s cornerstone theory of positive peace, articulated by essential scholars and leaders such as Dr. Maria Montessori and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we recall that peaceful communities exhibit more than just a lack of violence. They demonstrate care for all citizens, the presence of just relationships, and collaborative, nonviolent conflict resolution. We welcome abstracts that advance theory, research and practice on the theme of strengthening global and local communities to foster human security.
